Top Truck Challenge is one of the great events that happens every spring and with the advent of the internet we can relive it all throughout the year beginning this week on Motor Trend's YouTube Channel. The powers that be at The Enthusiast Network (publishers of Hot Rod, Four Wheeler and other high profile enthusiast magazines) has cut a swath across cyberspace and is eager to share the exciting content they once only presented in print.

This week's release of five episodes has totally different content than the DVD which will be available soon. Follow along and see what the Four Wheeler Top Truck Challenge has become one of the most exciting events in off-roading.

Diesel Power Challenge Now Airing on YouTube

Back in May, ten diesel truck owners and their teams descended on Denver, Colo. to put their rigs through several punishing trials known as the Diesel Power Challenge. The event is filmed on location for later release on DVD, but now is your chance to watch the action for free. Diesel Power Magazine has decided to release a new clip each day that shows just what these diesels endured throughout the week. The event did not unfold without drama, as competitors dealt with electrical issues, nitrous backfires and much more. See the events leading up to Lavon Miller’s exciting win despite his setback of power steering loss on the second day of competition.

This week, through tomorrow, July 25, the Motor Trend Channel has been posting fresh videos daily. From high-wattage horsepower numbers on the dyno to impressive obstacle course runs, the 2014 Diesel Power Challenge delivered a serious power trip to diesel enthusiasts.

High Drama Continues in Hollister: Top Truck Challenge 2014

Wednesday at the 2014 Top Truck Challenge delivered more action, destruction and excitement to Hollister Hills as drivers faced more brutality for the 2nd day of competition. Day 2 opened with the Obstacle Course, which promptly started claiming driveshafts and other parts while dashing hopes of finishing for others. It took out 3 drivers before the 4th was even able to clear the finish line. Up next was the Hill Climb event, where deep holes and ruts swallowed tires whole as drivers attempted to stay on course. Afterwards it was on to the Coal Chute, constructed of giant boulders and concrete. Once they made their way through that, there was an incredibly steep wall waiting to be cleared before crossing the finish. From the looks of the course the odds seemed unbeatable, but some drivers and their rigs had what it took to finish with impressive times.

Yes, they have to drive over that.

Video and photo updates on Four Wheeler’s Instagram page speak to the challenges these rigs faced, but no results are being announced just yet. At this moment competitors are in the midst of conquering the final and most grueling event of Top Truck Challenge 2014: the Tank Trap. As of press time none had yet to finish the course, but plenty had timed out or found their rigs succumbing to the Trap's perils. It’s been an incredible week so far, and we can’t wait to see how the points add up in the end. Action and Anguish on the Hills of Hollister: Top Truck Challenge 2014

The 2014 Top Truck Challenge is underway and as expected, showed no mercy to competitors on the first official day of competition. The opening Tow Test event welcomed drivers and their rigs with a 36,000-lb military tow vehicle waiting to be hauled uphill. The power needed to accomplish such a feat is tremendous, and gave competitors the opportunity to showcase what they brought to the table.

After the Tow Test it was on to the Frame Twister, which wasted no time living up to its name. It quickly claimed the tires and axle of Jeff Noggle’s ’92 GMC K1500, pictured here. Despite how bad it looks, Noggle got to work welding parts back together and was expected to be back in the saddle for the last event of the day. The cement, boulders, logs and overall mayhem found in the Frame Twister all culminated into suspense as everyone watched to see what happened (or broke) next. Recovery crews were on hand to remove the broken parts left behind, and there were plenty to be found.

The California drought eliminated the Mud Pit event as water conservation is essential right now, but organizers were ready with an alternative and responded with an old Top Truck Challenge standby: the Mini Rubicon. The Mini Rubicon took competitors through a large pit of boulders that tested both driver skill and power. Judging by the photos and videos on Four Wheeler’s Instagram updates, some had an easier time than others making their way through the course.

All of this and more took place just on Tuesday, the first official day at the 2014 Top Truck Challenge. There's plenty more to come, so be sure to check back soon for additional glimpses into the action and photos of destruction. AMSOIL at the Top Truck Challenge Day One: Mixing It Up

The trucks have rolled in to Hollister Hills and the energy level is once again high here in sunny California. In fact, it's been too sunny this year. There's been a drought so serious that Californian's are begging for relief. One impact of this dearth of rain is that we may not have a mud pit this year.

In response the Four Wheeler staff has stirred up their imaginations to devise new challenges. One of these will be unveiled this afternoon.

The forecast is for weather in the 70's all week, and mostly sun after a partially cloudy opener for this year's Top Truck Challenge. Our guess is that the weather pattern is the only thing that will be predictable this week. How the contenders deal with it will determine who has the last truck standing by week's end.

Top Truck Challenge Returns to Hollister Hills

The 22nd annual 2014 Top Truck Challenge event is just around the corner, kicking off June 9 in Hollister Hills, California. This Monday10 teams will descend on Hollister to prove themselves and their rigs worthy of the Top Truck Challenge Champion title. Plans have been in the works for months, culminating in a week of mass destruction for these heavily-modified 4x4’s. AMSOIL is the Official Lubricant of Top Truck Challenge, installed in each rig, ensuring that engine failure is not what takes them out.

The week features obstacle courses and trials that test the mettle of each competitor brave enough to face the gauntlet that is the Top Truck Challenge. Four Wheeler Magazine organizers go to extremes in designing the nastiest course they can dream up, aiming to take out as many trucks as possible. As they navigate through aptly named ordeals such as the Frame Twister, Mud Pit and Tank Trap, competitors strive to defeat the odds against them. Check out the list of contenders and the rigs they are working with here.

The Tow Test kicks it off.

Tow Test: Having these big, impressive rigs tow a load for 150 feet sounds easy, right? Wrong. Competitors find themselves facing an uphill climb towing a heavy load, usually a 36,000-lb cement mixer. This particular challenge has destroyed driveshafts and 2.5-ton axles in the past, while weeding out the weakest among the group on the very first event of the week.

Frame Twister: The Frame Twister always promises to deliver on its name, and it succeeds. Competitors are given 10 minutes to make it through 200 feet of seemingly-impossible obstacles. Giant boulders known as the ‘Squeeze Rock’ section, logs and deep holes made to swallow tires await the teams. The Frame Twister has destroyed many hopes and dreams along with the broken parts it’s collected over the years.

The Mud Pit is a messier kind of fun.

Mud Pit: The Mud Pit is about 135 feet in length and built to test the tires, cooling system and ground clearance. Competitors never know what awaits them underneath the bog, but Four Wheeler Magazine takes great pride making it every bit as unpredictable and difficult as years past.

Obstacle Course: Day 2 of Top Truck Challenge welcomes competitors with the Obstacle Course event that begins at the top of a mountain with only one way down; through various obstacles, tight turns and an off-camber dogleg finish. Cones are strategically placed throughout the course that will result in time-penalties if they are hit or knocked over on the way down.

Editors spend a whole year dreaming up new ways to get you stuck.

Hill Climb: After making their way through the downhill Obstacle Course, competitors move to a 600-foot-long uphill course wrought with loose dirt, twists, turns, and deep holes along the way for good measure. Competitors have 5 minutes to make their way as far as they can up a hill that averages a 60° angle without deviating off course or getting stuck as the clock ticks on.

Coal Chute: The Coal Chute made its debut at Top Truck Challenge 2013, as Four Wheeler Magazine looked for ways to make the week even more grueling. Last year the Coal Chute was approximately 525 feet long with steep walls over 7 feet high, lots of rocks and cement tubes littering the course. Four Wheeler Magazine promises even more destruction for the Coal Chute’s second year in existence.

The Tank Trap is where competitors show what they're made of.

Tank Trap: Wrapping up the week’s brutality is the dreaded Tank Trap, best described as the Holy Grail of Top Truck Challenge. Four Wheeler Magazine describes it as awe-inspiring, legendary and in a class by itself. There’s a reason it’s the last event of the week; those still standing have proven themselves worthy of a chance to make it through, and points are doubled to make it anyone’s game. From start to finish, the Tank Trap climbs almost 195 feet in elevation and forces rigs through a poison-oak lined course filled with deep water holes, dirt holes, a canyon nestled between steep walls and much more. The Tank Trap has taken down many solid rigs that withstood amazing feats prior to meeting it.

Time to Decide Who Goes to Top Truck Challenge 2014

The Four Wheeler Top Truck Challenge has to be one of the toughest challenges a truck can experience, and the most fun a driver can have this side of Paradise. The editorial staff of Four Wheeler magazine loves it, too. It's a jaw-dropper watching what some of these drivers will do to capture that crown.

The magazine makes it a point of letting their readers decide who goes and who stays home. It's a finite field, and a lot of folks across the continent are eager to be selected.

Sometimes the only way out is with a winch.

Here's a link to the potential candidates, though you can also run to the store and pick up a copy of the April 2014 edition at most mag stands. You'll find every kind of carriage here, from a '63 International Harvester Scout to a '96 Dodge Ram 1500. There's even a 2012 VW Bug in the mix. Be sure to check out Brad Daffin's rumpled '78 Ford F-150. He put it through the paces as an alternate last year and wants his turn to take a shot.

They hail from all over. Quite a few Canadians in the hunt again, and even though the majority are from the Western half of the country (it is a California event) there's still an Alabama team and a Floridian seeking your votes. There's even a Hilo, Hawaii contender.

This is one challenge in which if you don't like to get dirty, you'd best just stay home.

What's your idea of a good time? For off-road enthusiasts, being part of the Four Wheeler Top Truck Challenge is pretty much the ultimate in excitement. AMSOIL has been a co-sponsor and official lubricant of the event for years now, and the editors and publishers keep amping the stakes. The carnage is heart-stopping.

And yet, the skill sets displayed are equally remarkable as the various challenges put their vehicles and their wits to the test. Nearly competitor has watched the videos, so they think they know what they're in for. But the real thing gets pretty spiky and each year the mag adds a new twist, a new delightfully wicked challenge.

AMSOIL Top Truck Challenge Now Airing on Motor Trend TV

Back in June ten competitors and their trucks descended on Hollister Hills, CA for a week of brutality called the Top Truck Challenge. They endured a series of tests aimed at causing maximum destruction to their rigs, all in the name of clinching the title of Top Truck Challenge Champion. Four Wheeler Magazine hosted the event, and AMSOIL was on hand to provide lubricants to e
ach competitor so their engines could withstand the beating. While we couldn't prevent the broken parts and destruction caused by huge water-filled holes, boulders, and the dreaded Tank Trap, we could ensure their engines were up to par for the task.

Top Truck Challenge is a Wrap

The Top Truck Challenge 2011 is a wrap after three days of swamps, slopes, boulders & quagmire. The challenge concluded Thursday after the final event took out a few rigs in the Tank Trap, hailed as the most difficult challenge of them all. Huge water-filled holes successfully wiped out some of the competitors as they tried to clear the course, dashing the hopes of winning for a few of the participants. AMSOIL Technical Powersports Manager Len Groom sent a report on Friday on the final event of the 2011 TTC, and as expected it was grueling. The Tank Trap swallowed trucks, causing some of them to flip on the steep incline and require an extraction. Some of the holes made it impossible to even see the tires that ranged in size anywhere from 46’ to 54’, which illustrates the magnitude of the challenges found in the Tank Trap.

Despite all the difficulties these competitors faced, the Top Truck Challenge couldn’t wipe out everyone. Taking the win in the Buggy class was Alex Sanders out of Arkansas in his 2008 Chevrolet Buggy. While others battled against the odds in the Tank Trap, Sanders had a good run and cleared it so fast it was hard to get pictures. Overcoming an underdog position, Sanders achieved his stellar performance in a $2,000.00 rig.

Steven Montpas out of Roseburg, OR took home the title in the Truck class with his 1949 Willys pick-up. He performed well and kept ahead of the competition, landing him the top spot. Both winners performed consistently all week, earning them ultimate bragging rights and a trip back to compete in Top Truck 2012.

And so another Top Truck Challenge event is now behind us after a series of impressive attempts from all competitors. Next year Four Wheeler Magazine is inviting past winners to the 20th annual Top Truck Challenge, providing an interesting new platform to shake things up. Congratulations from AMSOIL to all of the competitors who were selected, but especially Alex Sanders and Steven Montpas for outdoing the competition and taking home the glory in what is known as the Olympics of off-roading. Both winners received a shopping spree courtesy of AMSOIL to keep all their toys and equipment running peak.

Top Truck Challenge Day 2

The second day of the Top Truck Challenge wrapped up on Wednesday, and it didn’t go without a hitch. Competitors were introduced to the Obstacle Course, Hill Climb and Mini Rubicon events. AMSOIL Technical Powersports Manager Len Groom provided us with another update straight from Hollister Hills, and reports this years’ event isn’t holding back any punches. Judging by the pictures, these rigs are facing some extreme obstacles as they make their way to through each event and try to remain in the competition.

The Obstacle Course held plenty of surprises for competitors as they attempted to clear it. Deep water and deeper holes proved this to be extremely difficult, catching some of the drivers on the ledge causing them to roll. Despite the challenges the competitors faced, most made it through to face the next challenge-the Hill Climb event.

The Hill Climb is a 60° slope with holes and ditches dug throughout, aimed at either flipping the rigs over or stopping them completely. There is no stopping or backing up in the Hill Climb event, momentum must be maintained while dodging the treacherous terrain at the same time. On a hill that’s difficult to even stand on, let alone drive, most drivers were able to clear it though there were a couple of rollovers.

Up next we saw the Mini Rubicon, one of the most challenging events in the Top Truck Challenge. The proving ground for this event was bigger than in years past, and producers made sure it wouldn’t be easy. In addition to deep holes, giant boulders were placed throughout to ensure some broken parts at the end of the day. In spite of all the hurdles, the Mini Rubicon didn’t take out any competitors and they were all able to move on to the dreaded Tank Trap on Thursday.

Top Truck Challenge Day 1: More Brutal Than Ever

We just got a report from AMSOIL Powersports Technical Product Manager Len Groom, who is live on the scene of the 2011 Top Truck Challenge in Hollister Hills, CA. The challenge kicked off Tuesday, with the competitors being introduced to the 2011 event by the Tow Test, Mud Pit and Frame Twister events. While the Tow Test claimed only a broken driveshaft on a buggy, the Frame Twister lived up to its name and kept most competitors from even finishing. The Frame Twister event is a formidable proving ground filled with holes, rocks and logs aimed at taking out these monstrous trucks with little effort. Len Groom reported that is was the most demanding Frame Twister yet and summed up what has been seen so far in one word: Tough.

After numerous extractions and broken parts in the Frame Twister, the challenge moved on to the Mud Pit event. These rigs don’t typically do well in this type of sludge but competitor Mike Keller (pictured) hit the mud flying and skimmed along the top, making it look easy. We are now in Day 2 of the 2011 Top Truck Challenge, which will see the competitors battle the Obstacle Course, Hill Climb and Mini Rubicon. Judging by the photos we have received thus far, things are just getting good.

Top Truck Challenge Gets Underway This Week

The Top Truck Challenge was established 19 years ago, and has been steadfast in keeping with the original idea of pushing 4x4’s to their ultimate limits in Hollister Hills, CA. The Top Truck Challenge is a grueling week-long competition that tests the mettle of some of the toughest trucks and drivers in the country. AMSOIL has been the Official Oil of the Top Truck Challenge for several years, which provides an excellent proving ground to show what AMSOIL lubricants are capable of handling. Hollister Hills is a Mecca for off-road and dirtbike enthusiasts, with over 4,000 acres of terrain designed for every skill level.

Selected by readers of Four Wheeler Magazine, competitors in the Top Truck Challenge are pitted against one another in a series of extreme off-road events over the course of 4 days. Aptly named challenges such as the Tow Test, Frame Twister, Mid Pit, Obstacle Course, Hill Climb, Mini Rubicon and Tank Trap claim some of the mightiest rigs. While each of the events plays a part in taking competitors out, the Tank Trap is known as the ‘crown jewel’ of the Top Truck Challenge. This event in particular is aimed at pushing each truck to its limit as they face unrelenting obstacles while the clock works against them.

The TTC is filmed and aired on national television later in the year, but AMSOIL is on site and will be providing exclusive updates throughout the week. Spotlight: Competitors of the 2011 Top Truck Challenge

The 2011 Top Truck Challenge is just under two weeks away, and anticipation is building among each of the competitors. 10 competitors and 2 alternates have been selected and will descend on Hollister Hills, CA for the week of June 6th to battle it out for the 2011 Top Truck title. The Top Truck Challenge takes no prisoners; the courses are brutal and capable of taking down even the mightiest truck. Hollister is known for its challenging terrain, drawing four wheel and powersports enthusiasts from all over to take on the trails and attempt to make it out with their rides intact. With events like the Frame Twister, Tank Trap and Mud Pit, conquering each of them and making it to the top is a near-impossible feat. The editors at Four Wheeler Magazine are constantly ahead of the curve in keeping the TTC as demanding and twisted as possible, with a no-holds barred approach at making sure they take out as many rigs as they can over the course of the week.

Some of the competitors responded to a Q&A interview with Four Wheeler Magazine editors, each providing some quotes to illustrate where their heads are at as they prepare for the 2011 Top Truck Challenge. Q: What made you want to compete in TTC?

A: TTC is like the Olympics of four-wheeling to me and being able to compete at something I truly love (wheeling) is one of the biggest honors for me!
Q: What's one thing people should know about you?
A: I built my truck almost entirely myself, right down to the concept of the doubled 205s and the bodywork. I do have a lot of time in my truck, but not a lot of money, and hopefully I can show that it doesn't necessarily take a lot of money to compete but a lot of ingenuity and a good driver.

Q: What's one thing people should know about you?
A: Wheeling is my favorite sport in life. I spend the majority of my free time helping to organize events in the Oregon area so that all of my wheeling buddies and the next generation of wheeling kids have places to wheel. Often times, for various reasons, our wheeling sites get shut down, so I try to organize private property, etc., for them to have a good time. I enjoy using my years of wheeling experience to try to help all my friends get their trucks on the right track so that they can do their best. Hopefully I'm making a difference!

Who cares if the rig gets beat up or broke, that's what it was built for. If it wasn't then why you do you take it out to play?

Top Truck Challenge Voting Now Open

The AMSOIL-sponsored Top Truck Challenge is one of the most anticipated events each year, pitting some of the mightiest rigs against one another in a series of punishing challenges. Those selected to compete are at the mercy of seven events aimed at taking them down, with aptly named titles such as the Frame Twister, Tank Trap and Mud Pit.

One of the best parts of this event is that readers of Four Wheeler Magazine are handed the reins in deciding which trucks are up to the task. Readers are given the rundown on the 50 rigs up for consideration, with top vote getters finding themselves preparing for the throwdown in Hollister, CA. Voting is now open, with official ballots being distributed in the April issue of Four Wheeler on stands February 15th. Be sure to pick up the magazine to have your say in who gets a chance to play in this twisted proving ground come June.

AMSOIL-Sponsored Top Truck Challenge Now Airing

Back in June, 10 rigs descended on Hollister Hills, CA to compete in the 2010 Top Truck Challenge, each attempting to clear insane obstacles such as the Frame Twister and Tank Trap in the fastest times possible. This event is the only one of its kind and has the ability to take out the most rugged of rigs, never failing to do so. As a primary sponsor AMSOIL was on hand to see what went down, having covered the action earlier this spring. The Top Truck Challenge is the ultimate proving ground for some of the most innovative off-road builds in the country and each one has AMSOIL installed.

In October it was announced here on the AMSOIL Promotions blog that the Top Truck Challenge was airing on the Outdoor Channel. If you haven’t been keeping up with this years’ series, there are only a couple episodes left to see how it all played out so be sure to tune in now. 2010 Top Truck Challenge Now Airing on Outdoor Channel

The editors and publishers of Four Wheeler Magazine are into torture. That is, they spend eleven months of every year trying to dream up ways to torture vehicles in the annual Top Truck Challenge in Hollister, California. It has been described as a week of organized chaos, and it turns ordinary off roaders into heroes when they simply survive this grueling experience.

Top Truck Challenge Winners

The 2010 Top Truck Challenge recently wrapped up in Hollister, CA and found the two trucks worthy of being crowned the Top Truck of 2010 in their respective classes. After a week of putting their rigs through organized chaos, Mike Karwath and Jason Gray proved to be the mightiest of them all.

Jason Gray (top right) took top honors in the Truck Class with his 1975 Chevy Blazer and earned himself a little extra respect for competing and winning on 46’ tires compared to the 54’ majority. A consistent runner, Jason used his driving skills to offset the effect of having smaller tires to complete the competition. In the trouble spots that stopped his momentum, he weighed his options and found the best one before proceeding. This paid off with him being the only driver to make it up through the Tank Trap, made even more impressive by the extra challenges he faced throughout the week.

Mike Karwath was also an impressive force throughout the entire challenge, and led his 2009 Tube Chassis YJ to victory in the Buggy class. He finished in the top three of every event, and set a record in the Tank Trap by completing it in just 3 minutes, 54 seconds. The Hill Climb was a tough proving ground this year, with drivers needing to know when to ease up and when to floor it while steering wherever they could. Mike showed that he knew when to hold the line and when to push the limits, and as a result he managed to establish himself as a heavy hitter in this years’ competition. His rig was coined ‘Bulletproof’ by AMSOIL Technical Product Manager Len Groom after suffering no equipment failures all week.

The 2010 Top Truck Challenge was again a success, with record setting runs in the Hill Climb and Mini-Rubicon during the entire week’s worth of action.
